Even though I have been at UCLA for two years now and always
walk past this museum on my way to class, I had never actually taken the time
to visit. But thanks to DESMA I finally had the opportunity to do so. I visited
the exhibit “Making Strange” by the artist Vivin Sundaram. Upon entering the
exhibit, his artwork implemented fashion in a way I hadn’t seen before. While
walking around I noticed a lot of varying mannequins that were dressed in
different clothing comprised of recycled materials and medical supplies such as
ace bandages, medical masks, paper cups, and napkins. I believe this exhibit
slightly relates to unit 3, Medtech + Art in the sense that Sundaram utilizes medical
supplies and props to create art with the message conveying concern with human
body, illness and aging.
There were also other displays that were completely composed
of recycled things. This was a thought-provoking concept to me because it put
in perspective that even things that were once considered useless and even
trash, can be re purposed and can make for beautiful art pieces. Just like the
photo presented, he implements things such as sponges and socks that one
typically wouldn’t perceive as art but that’s what makes this exhibit unique.
He even designed a dress made of tampons which was among one of the stranger
materials he used that challenged the typical materials used in the fashion
industry. His artwork is not necessarily about aesthetics but rather the
messages being conveyed through the influence of art.
